Hi I have a timed bathroom extractor fan in my apartment that stopped working. After removing the unit and testing with a meter I found no input current. All fuses are ok. Where to go next. The Any help much appreciated. Thanks Chris.

This may be obvious but there should be an isolator switch or fused connection unit for the fan. Did someone turn it off?

Where are you checking for voltage? You should have voltage between neutral and live all the time and voltage between neutral and switched live when the light is turned on.

What are u checking for voltage with?

Hi I have checked all the fuses on the consumer units and all ok and know of no other switches or fuses in the apartment.

I am using a regular multi meter and it shows no power at all at the fan.

When you take off the face unit you are left with the base screwed to the ceiling. The input cable enters the 3 pronged socket in the base into which the prongs of the head unit fits

it probably receives its current from the lighting rose in the ceiling. See if you can identify the cables that supply the power if you look at the rose. You can expect to find live, switched live, neutral, earth, and with luck the core colours will be the same as the ones that arrive at the fan.

If not at the rose it might be at the light switch.

However it is odd for both live and switched live to have come loose at the same time.

Have any changes been made to the bathroom lighting?

Are you completely sure there is no sign of an isolator switch in the bathroom, or immediately outside it? they are often placed high up or above the door as they are only used for servicing.

A fan isolator usually looks like a light switch with an unusually wide tumbler. It might not be marked.

p.s. some people have a psychological aversion to ventilation, and will turn off fans. many of these people are women.

Hi JohnD and thanks for the reply. I will have another search for an isolator but pretty sure there is non. I will go over the whole system again tomorrow and hope to find an obvious reason for failure. There is a tenant in the flat at the moment and he hasn't made any changes as far as I know but I will quiz him tonight. Thanks for the input. Chris.
