Recently our dear builder (so called professionals) insisted on placing ugly extractor fans in our Bathroom (althought there is a vented window) and seperate tiolet. They insisted this was for building regs (fair enough) However they only placed the fan in the ceiling and did not connect them to any ducting or outside wall. The result is they expel air into our upstairs niebours flat (Not very pleasant for them) Does anyone know the rules for these types of fans. Also when investigating to run some ducting to them (have to now come in from upstairs as all ceilings have been boarded and plastered) The fans are conected to mains with external switches but do not seemed to be earthed can anyone advice on this.
Any information greatly appriciated

Extractor fans must be ducted to outside. No duct is worse than not having one at all, as they will just move damp air into other parts of the building, probably causing mould and rot.

If these vent into another flat upstairs, this won't comply with building regulations anyway - the hole will have breached the fire barrier between the two flats.

Most of these fans don't have earth connections, so no earth there is probably ok - or do you mean no earth wires at the switches? or in the cables?

What to do - don't pay these bodgers yet. Get tham to fit the fans properly with ducting to outside (and if that means they have to replace ceilings, that is for them to arrange at their own expense).
Also note that this work is notifiable, so they should either have informed your local building control before starting, or be a member of a Part P competant persons scheme.
