Hi all. I've been away for a few days and not had much time to try fix this issue. I did have a go yesterday. It seems the black plastic bit where one of the screws go in has snapped so screws not staying in. I though I'd bought a like for like part so was just going to switch but the new one seems a bit different.
I'm a bit confused with the equipment to check for live wiring and the fuse box doesn't seem to be labelled correctly. If anyone has any explanation, I'd appreciate it. I'll try have another go at it or just get someone in to do it.
Anyone know how much the job would cost roughly if I do request it?
I suspect the fitting needs swapping out. But before that, you could try turning off the power and using an insulated driver to poke each contact in turn to try and unstick them.
I took it off but couldn't refit due to a bit of the black plastic snapping. I've been quoted £70 by one electrican to fit as I need it done as soon as possible as I'm getting a bit fed up now!
I'd start with changing the complete fitting. What you're looking for from Screwfix (or whoever) is a "batten holder". Something along these lines will do the job...
If the breakers aren't labelled, first turn off the mains coming into the house, so everything is dead.
Remove what's there now, including any plastic backing plate. Take a photo of the wiring, so we can talk you through connecting the new one up if needs be. Reuse the existing screws to fix the new fitting to the ceiling.
Hi. I got another quote for £35 and was available within a few days so accepted this quote.
The original pendant did appear to be broken so I do believe it needed replacing, but it turns out the pull chord had a faulty wire so was replaced also as it wouldn't go live when turned on. The guy had a spare one in his van fortunately and no extra charge.
The power didn't seem to turn off when I originally checked and I didn't have an insulated screwdriver so was aprehensive to continue. It turns out the upstairs lighting is for downstairs and vice versa.
