Hi guys,

Am looking to get an extractor fan that has a timer and light in it for my shower cubicle.

I want it to work independently from the bathroom light so how does or what do i need, to get it wired up?

Can it be fed straight from the junction box i have in my loft that supplies the upstairs lights onto a double pole pull switch isolator located in my bathroom?

Any help/info would be much appreciated.

Ta.

Although you can get extractor fans which also have lights the two items can normally be wired independent but the timer would normally be triggered by the use of the light

If you look at the regulations you can have a completely manually system but in reality to get people to switch it on is just not going to happen. So there are three common methods.
1) Connect to work when light is used.
2) PIR which detects movement.
3) A humidity detector.

For 1) since normally only required when there are no opening windows one would assume low light anyway so seems good option.

Although the PIR will work it is more expensive and often timer's are also built into PIR so care is needed not to duplicate the run time.

3) The humidity detector great for bath or shower but useless if also one wants it to trigger with loo use.

The feed is very commonly taken from the lighting supply which now must be RCD protected in a bathroom but really you should ask whoever is signing the completion cert as it is their call.

Although you can replace to fit a new one or alter it's design will come under Part P and to advise without seeing the site is not really a good idea so ask LABC or registered electrician.

You should really feed into a triple pole isolator from the supply if fitting a fan with timer.
