How do you seal the gap between the intergral overflow outlet and the 2 slots in the waste?

why would you want to?

i assume you dont mean block the holes up and you want to seal the grating to the whb, if you put silicone or plumbers mate on the underside of the grating, push it through the whb, then put more on the grating where it protrudes through the whb, fit a washer, then tighten up the jam nut

No - It's the surround of the oval slots - and How I seal this with the ceramic opening. I realise the slots need to be open.

i think my post answers you, do you the only thing i would add is to line the slots in the grating up with the slots in the whb, the 2 lots of sealent are either side of the slots so it will seqal and leave the slots free to do their job
