On behalf of my dad his 12 year old Baxi Solo 2 PF has packed up.

Symptoms:
Noisy for last few weeks
When realised it wasnt working found that the fuse had blown in the spur for the timer and boiler
Now only 'Boiler on' ight is on
No ignition light
No fan on
No pilot on
Pump ok
When I removed cover I think there was that carsogenic smell, you get with burnt out electrocnic components? Could be the loft I suppose....
Oh and not been serviced for 5 years... Doooh!

As a spark I am assuming this is a safety lockout feature and may point to the gas solenoid not opening. Fault finding flow chart in the manual points to the fan or presssure switch?

Could any one advice on costs and other possibles with this popular model or unpopular going on the amount of posts there is on this brand/model.

I had similar thing with a Potterton Suprima and had to change the PCB in the end but they are renowned for it apparently.

A heads up would be greatly appreciated, I am a spark but a firm believer of 'horses for courses' and have told Dad to get a Gas engineer round asap. Being pre warned and having a bit of an idea would eliminate some labour time from the advice of you guys.

Thanks

As you report "noisy" operation for some weeks I suspect the fan has failed, however it is not impossible for a failing fan to take out the PCB with it, which would explain the "acrid" smell.

Fan approx £120
PCB approx£130
Both plus Vat and Labour

expect a fair bill
Moral of this tale - if a boiler is noisy, get it looked at do not leave it
as it will lead to a more expensive repair!!

Good luck ;)

Very good boiler and worth keeping going.

Boards do go on them though.

Easy enough for a RGI to diag. and fit new board.

Squealing or metal to metal rubbing is the fan seizing up, and any scorch marks on the pcb, or the grey pcb housing can sometimes overheat. Good boilers. I always keep the PCB's on the van.

Thanks guys,

Just to expand on the noise it was more of a noisy vibration, which could be a failing fan I suppose. And the smell was only slight but like you get when you from old flourescent light fittings.

So would the fan failing cause a lockout on the gas valve and not allow ignition?

Finallly good to hear they are a sound boiler, I will pass this on to me Dad and update with the outcome from the Engineer

Thanks All
