Why do bellboxes not use a standard form of Re-chargable battery?

I have a perfectly good Flashguard (RED) bellbox but can't find a replacement battery for it.
The one that's in it is like a series of flat, round batteries placed on top of each other, then wrapped in blue plastic with a red wire from the + end and a black wire from the other end. It has 7XN 280BC 8 4U wrote on it.

Can I mount every day re-chargable batteries in it's place, if yes, what voltage should I fit?

They're 6 volt but you should be able to get one from Maplins or an on-line alarm shop.
