Bench dog clamps

Pls can you tell me how “bench dog clamps” work? Those I’ve looked at seem to consist of a tube 19 or 20 mm with an arm at right angles to that and an overcentre clamp on the end of the arm. I don’t understand why when you operate the clamp the tube doesn’t just slide up out of the hole in the bench. Cheers, Terry

Because it pushes to the side also. Creates a lot of friction in the hole and won't pull out.
 
Rsgaz thank you. I wondered if that was how it worked but wanted to check. I want something to hold down a straight edge guide (eg a bit of 3 ply) on top of the work but still be low enough for the motor of a circular saw to pass over it.
