Best Carpet Protector? Using this & painting base boards

I'm sick of tripping on dust sheets! I've read a few reviews on self adhesive carpet protectors, each giving a variety of opinions and disaters. I was going to go for the reasonably priced Everbuild's Contract Roll and Stroll Carpet Protector - I was wondering what people have had sucess with in the past?

Normally when painting the baseboards I use 2inch masking tape tucked round the edges of the carpet before I paint. If I use the carpet protector, will it stick over the masking tape? Or any other ideas of how to do it quick and tidy?
