Best drill for core work?

As others have said, you'd be best renting but do be careful that the drill they give you is suitable.. I recently klled the gearbox on my Metabo drill and had to rent but the drill that I rented was simply too fast for coring.. I have replaced my Metabo, which was unsuitable for coring due to the highly aggressive clutch (I have the scars to prove it) for a Marcryst coring drill which is designed specifically for driving cores... sadly I hven't had chance to use it as I'm off to hospital tomorrow to have another disc removed from my back...Owch

sometimes you just hit a meterial which won't diamond core. Certain stones are too fine grained and dense and quite a few bricks are too hard. In those cases if possible stitch drilling is much quicker. In very few cases like the one pictured you can't even stitch drill and you have to chisel out the lime mortar and remove lumps.

Here is the exit wound from what began as a 22mm tungsten drill from the inside.

Here is the exit wound from boulders chiseled away at from inside

Here is the effect of falling lumps on the roof below after it has been covered with cardboard and pliewood to protect it. Had we not protected it the rocks would have landed in the kitchen sink and probably smashed that aswell.

 Thats the problem with Tykes.. They make their houses out of rocks and mud.... :D

Lot to be said for hammer and chisel then, . and getting the spot on the outer wall by measuring to a spirit level on the window cill . Bloody Young Gas Fitters   Do it the Fred Dibnah/Nige F/Kevplumb way

Lot to be said for saving a bit of money by not hiring unneccessary tools for a one-off job too:?

Funny how the older I get, the fewer tools I actually seem to use.

i always drill from outside to inside to save the damage "bursting through" does to the external wall.
