best finish for Bannister / Handrails / Sides

i have rubbed down all the wood, as it was a dark brown colour, iv got it basically down to its original wood colour,

today i shall hoover up and removed as much dust as possible, also from the walls, i will then apply this cleaner / degreaser to all the wood.

my next step tommorow will be to prime/undercoat the wood.

im after advice on what finish i should put on, i want a pure white colour, but not sure on types of paint, gloss, matt, eggshell, and i keep reading about oil based paint,

can soembdy please advice me on what im best using,

also do i do 2 coats of undercoat and 1 main coat, or am i best doing 1 undercoat and 2 overcoats ?
