Hello

I am a diy person, who is disabled, in a lot of pain and can’t do much. I am autistic with severe anxiety social issues and sensory issues. I live in the Solent city area, but can’t travel outside of this area.

I go to my local Wickes, and rarely B&Q.

I would like to know where is the best place to buy wood (cheapest) for making cupboards, of which are going in the shed, so it doesn’t matter what colour.

I would also like to know where I can get more specialty wood (for things like chopping boards).

I don’t have access to a van, but do have a ford kuga, so anything that will fit or be delivered cheaply would be great, also places for trades only please don’t list. As I don’t have access to them, I can get anything from them.

Thank you

Local timber merchants will often be cheaper than DIY sheds for cut sheet materials. That said, not all timber merchants have cutting facilities. Most will deliver though .

There used to be a timbermerchants on Forton Road in Gosport but I believe they have now closed. Builders merchants can be pricey unless you can get a trade discount. I use B & Q for sheet materials out at Havant who also do cutting. Wicke’s tend to be slightly cheaper on timber in my experience.

For storage in a shed I use old chests of drawers or kitchen units. It tends to be the doors that bump the price up. The carcasses can be quite cheap.

Quite a few timber merchants do online deliveries. Try woodturning forums for sources of materials for things like chopping boards.

I'm forever pulling usable off cuts of stuff out of skips.. Perhaps ask at smaller places (not like B&Q, Wickes) that sell what you want, if you can have/buy their waste/offcuts. I got to know the owner of my local independent bathroom place well enough that he would call me when he was filling the skip with ex display stuff; worked for him because he needed fewer skips and worked for me to get massive panels of toughened glass, shower trays etc for free

Bits of waste worktops and kitchen cabinets would seem to meet your requirements?

If I had your type of issues I'd keep well away from gung ho builders merchants.

Wickes should meet most of your needs, roof bars on your car are very handy. Small pieces of specialised timber can be bought on eBay and delivered.
