I have yellow one I got from B&Q, it works well, but obviously only good on plaster and batten, if it laths then we don't stand a chance with anything apart from an old beaten up masonry bit (that will go through plaster but not through the joist (or pipes ))
I can honestly say that it DOESN'T detect wood, no matter what anyone else says.
What is DOES do rather well is detect metal and of course will easily detect plasterboard screws or nails which are of course in the studs.
Will also detect plastic pipes behind dry-lining if they have water in them.
