best varnish for painted wood

my girlfriend who's an artist is painting a wooden box. She's using water based paints and wants to varnish the thing once she's finished. What varnish should she use?

She's a very good artist, and the box has been painted in an traditional style so I'm looking for a varnish which would be best suited to it.

spray it to get a much better finish. i.e clear laquer.

I would speak to an artists' supplier. For a wooden box, I would see most modern finishes as too hard.
