need to repaint the large areas ofwoodwork in my hall/landing and want to use water based paint as it does not go yellow. Problem is that when I tried some a couple of years ago it was not glossy and left terrible brush marks Can anybody recommend a water based paint which will not leave brush marks?

Has anybody used leyland acrylic gloss which is acrylic but with some VOC's.

Also woodwork is 1930s and having removed existing paint I am left with original dark stain which shows through primer, so will need to seal with Shellac. Can I use an acrylic primer or am I better using oil based primer on top of Shellac?

If you want a gloss finish go for dulux or johnstones aqua gloss..its about the shiniest there is out there at the moment.

One you have applied the shellac based primer (asuming you mean zinseer)
then you can overcoat with water or oil based
