We are proposing to fit bi fold doors in a new extension, the doorway being approx 8 feet and to contain 3 doors. Would you install a heavy duty lintel or does the frame carry the weight of the doors?
We installed 14ft doors (6 doors) and we installed a hefty catnic lintel as spec'd by the structural engineer.
The doors will need a lintel as the frame will not support the doors per se. And in any case what is going to support whatever is above the doors?
Alternatively you could use a beam. Again this would be spec'd by a structural engineer.
I would speak to the door company as they may provide some generic calcs for a lintel, however this probably would not include supporting the load above the doors so you will probably still need s SE - Its structural so building control will want to see calcs.
