Binding coconut matting

I've got to cut some rolls of coconut matting along the length and neet to protect the cut edges from freying (hope the spellings okay). Due to cost of sisal or linen binding tape and effort requires to hand stitch, I though that pumping the edges with clear silicone might be a fast and effective way of binding.

It's for marquee use so beautiful finish isn't that important.

Any thoughts. Is this a stroke of genius?
