What is the difference between the black and blue damp proof membrane?

In screwfix 4x3m 1200 gauge black membrane is £10

But the Blue 4x3m 1200 gauge membrane is £15

Is there any technical advantages in the blue over black?

Not that i know of.

The only thing i can think of is that it costs more to produce 'coloured' plastics and that black is rather susceptible to sunlight.

IIRC, both these types from screwfix meet the same standards.

It may be just me, but blue poly seems to be quite 'stretchy' and it takes a lot to tear it when messing about with it. But in use performance should be the same

I thought that in the old days blue was thinner than black

Funny you should say that Mik. I remember it being the other way round when I worked at a merchants; 1200g - blue, 1000g - black, and 500g - clear.

But that could have been a local policy used to differentiate for the staff as we cut it off the roll and I'm going back 15+ years. Always used blue visqueen on site though and still do.
