laying a 900mm block paving path around a circular swimming pool. One side of the path is the concrete swimming pool the other is a timber retaining wall for the garden. Would you recommend an edging course on either or both sides or not ?

you don't really need it. In any case you can simply lay the last few courses on concrete if you don't want one.
