I have an intermittent blockage(?) in my hot water system. If I run a bath and then run ashower 15 minutes later the cold water will run out. Not always but often.
I can remedy this by blasting a hosepipe down my bath tap which seems to work but this is a bit of a drastic workaround, or by leaving it overnight which seems to sort it out after a minute of spluttering.

I think I must have some sediment blocking the pipes but how do I get rid of it?

thanks

Presumably its supplied from a cistern.

Have you inspected that when the water is not running out?

Sounds like the cold storage tank is running out of water.

Check the ballvalve isn't blocked.

And they're storage tanks, not cisterns Tony. :roll:

On my Water Regs course they were called cisterns.

I also think the CIPHE calls them cisterns!

Extract from the 1999 water Regulations ( which I thought you had studied and been assessed on ??? )

SCHEDULE 2
Regulation 4(3)

REQUIREMENTS FOR WATER FITTINGS

Interpretation

1. In this Schedule-

"backflow" means flow upstream, that is in a direction contrary to the intended normal direction of flow, within or from a water fitting;

"cistern" means a fixed container for holding water at atmospheric pressure;

"combined feed and expansion cistern" means a cistern for supplying cold water to a hot water system without a separate expansion cistern;

"combined temperature and pressure relief valve" means a valve capable of performing the function of both a temperature relief valve and a pressure relief valve;

"contamination" includes any reduction in chemical or biological quality of water due to a change in temperature or the introduction of polluting substances;

"distributing pipe" means any pipe (other than a warning, overflow or flushing pipe) conveying water from a storage cistern, or from hot water apparatus supplied from a cistern and under pressure from that cistern;

"expansion cistern" or "expansion vessel" means a cistern or vessel connected to a water heating system which accommodates the increase in volume of water in the system when the water is heated from cold;

Cisterns/tanks/loft baths/duck ponds, its all the same and we know what was meant :wink:

I was taught when doing my C&G that a tank was a sealed vessel whereas a cistern is open to atmosphere. Referring to the course textbook gives the following definitions:

Cistern: An open top circular or rectangular cold water storage vessel with a loose lid or cover.

Tank: A closed rectangular vessel used for the storage and circulation of hot water.

Cylinder: A closed cylindrical vessel with parallel sides and a domed end, used for the storage and circulation of hot water.

Sorry, being pedantic but im bored. Fixed my printer, car and heating so far this weekend, naff all on tv, cant afford to go to the pub and better half is asleep.....

Exactly, maybe things were different during the middle ages?
