Hi

I have an old fireplace in the kitchen with the chimney breast creating a recess 36cm deep and 1m across. I would like to block this recess off with plasterboard so I have a straight run for my wall cupboards. Is this difficult to do and whats the best way of doing it ?

Thanks

Nick

You could build a stud wall, so that the plasterboard comes flush with the front of the chimney breast. It's not a complicated or difficult job.

Personally, I find kitchen space far to valuable to block off a significant part of it (unless you have a large kitchen). I'd be looking for ways to utilise the space.

I would be considering ways of wall mounting base units so they follow the line of the wall units and gain a bit of cupboard space. It doesn't have to be easily accessible, but we all need somewhere to store all those new kitchen gadgets we buy, or receive as presents, but never use.

 There you are then - a stud wall up to the bottom of the wall units, and a base unit stood on top of it.
