Just a sanity check. I'm having two RSJ's installed, one on each leaf. Because the doorway is close to the end of the leaf and I don't want to start disturbing brickwork outside (for various reasons), the brick leaf is being extended by 150mm. This makes the leaf 250mm from the door (and the padstone is pretty much made pointless but hey ho). You can see I've started the extention work at the bottom. Rather then extend the concrete block leaf I'm using the amble room and extending that RSJ instead.
The question is when you look at it your brain says they aren't tied... it's not in symmetry... it's not right... it must be unsafe etc. Even though it's only 150mm extra. Will the Building Control officer think this when he/she sees it?
I do have the option of extending across onto the two lower concrete blocks. Structurally I can't see it making any difference but visually it may look stronger. There was a window above which is why the concrete blocks are flush. If I were to do the same any higher I'll have to start knocking concrete blocks out, more work, no structural benefit, but will the BC officer '**** a brick'? It's a conversation I either avoid or plan for.
Cheers!
