Hi, recently my combi boiler's ignition light has not been coming on now and again when we're running the water (no hot water !!!).

Admittedly its only happened about 4 times in the last month but I'm aware I'll need to get it looked at. It was serviced last December when a pump went on it.

Anyway, I took the metal cover off this morning to look at the little window where the ignition light is and the metal casing was red hot (not the outer one I'd took off... the casing behind it, where you can see the ignition light from).

The heating had been on most of the morning. Is it normal for it to get red hot ?

Cheers Ian

Well, not RED hot, but it will be hot if the boilers been on. My advise would be to contact your service guy / gal and get them to check it over.

Thanks for the advice, this is really hot to touch. The boiler is a worcestor bosch 24i and its 7 years old.

Thanks

You are not meant to be touching it! Thats why it has an outer case with an air gap to allow cooling air to flow.

They often run at between 80-120°C. Spit on it and see if its over 100° in which case the spit will immediately boil away.

Cheers folks...gonna get it looked over. I was thinking of joining one of these "boiler care" things with British Gas or something. My only concern is my Mum and Dad have been with BG for yrs, recently had problems with a couple of radiators and were charged 50 quid per radiator (I thought thats why they paid their 20 quid a month, to alleviate uneccessary costs). Anyway, any advice on the best boiler care options please ??

Cheers

Worcester 24i doesnt have a diverter valve as its a dual pass heat exchanger.

Also i doubt its overheating, the inner cases do get hot if its been running all day.

More detail as to why they had to pay? Had they been told the system was full of muck and needed cleaning?

BG homecare 200 covers whole CH system. Its a bit cheaper if you have a flexi contract but you pay £50 if you call them out.

To be honest I cant remember the exact details but I know they were shocked because they had to pay 50 quid per job (and doing 2 radiators was classed as 2 jobs)...since then its sort of scared me out of getting this kind of cover. I'd certainly consider it if I knew there were no hidden extra costs. Currently looking at getting the homecare 200 package.

Cheers Ian

Depeding on the type of contract they were on they could have been on a the flexi 200. Thats £50 per breakdown.

Yeah, i'm actually thinking of that now. they were probably on the flexi contract. I'll double check when I see them.

Cheers

Cheers Petit Pablo, thats what I'll go for although I notice they say they dont cover damage caused by sludge and scale....Im just hoping they don't put most of my future problems down to that (yeah, I'm suspicious ha)

Cheers
