I have a Vokera Maxin 24E central heating boiler in my flat, and twice now its blown its fuse (a 3A fuse - blew once last month and just there now, about a month later).

The hot water also takes ages to heat up (two minutes or more), although the central heating works fine. Our letting agent deals with repairs, and when I brought this up they said that is must just be the way the boiler is, and that there is no problem with it.

The gas safety test was done last week, and the boiler passed. I'm just wondering if the fuse blowing and delayed hot water might be connected, and was looking for some advice before I get back in contact with our letting agent to organise a repair (if they send someone out and nothing is wrong, we have to pay the call out fee).

Thanks for your help.

Next time it blows the fuse call the agents, in you dont replace the fuse there will be something wrong so you wont have to pay the call out fee. the 2 issues might be connected.

The hot water also takes ages to heat up (two minutes or more),

It should NOT take that length of time to get hot water from the tap. When you run a hot tap, boiler starts about a second later, burner ignites and water starts to get hot. If the boiler is a long distance away, then water flowing in the pipe will eventually get to the tap, BUT boiler will respond almost imediately to you running a hot tap.

Show your letting agent this reply. If he insists the mega delay is in order, ask for written confirmation as it will be a55 kicking time

If someone comes to check the boiler, ask for visual of their Gas Safe Card forst as they may be operating under the radar. If card and details are in order, ask for cause of blown fuse as fuse is a safety link that breaks when somethin is wrong. You will no doubt have carried out the test I detailed above and will know if the boiler is sluggish in operation. Under the boiler you will see several pipes connected to the boiler. The left pipe will be fatter than three middle pipes. Get someone to run the hot tap while you are touching the pipe to the right of the above fat pipe. when the hot tap is running, boiler should respond and the pipe you are touching should start to heat up and the temperature gauge should start to climb.

Thanks for the replies. Replaced the fuse and it blew again straight away, so I've emailed the letting agent. They're usually pretty quick, and no heating/hot water gets put on 24 hour call out so should be done tomorrow. The gas safety check was definitely official, received a copy of the certificate, and it's a legal requirement in Scotland. There were a couple of issues noted on the certificate, nothing was done about it though.

Hopefully should all be sorted anyway, thanks.

Chris, you should not be changing the fuse yourself.

I know it may seem easy to do and gets back hot water etc. but it would be far better for you to call the engineer with the blown fuse in place.

Have you been fitting a fast blow or a delay fuse? What does the engineer fit?

Blowing fuses intermittently is usually caused by a faulty pump and measuring the current will give a good clue about what is wrong.
