My boiler makes a very loud humming noise, occasionally. Trying to work out what it might be so I can speak to the boiler service man about it.

Only happens when the hot water tap is turned on. Unlikely to happen if the heating is off. When the heating is on (or recently on and the boiler is hot), opening the hot water tap to about 50% sometimes causes the boiler to make a very loud humming noise for as long as the tap is on. Shut the tap and the noise goes, ending with a woomphf sort of noise. Open the tap 100% and no noise happens, it's only at partial flows.

I can't get a recording of it, never happens when I want it to. Sounds exactly the same as the short noise in this video at 5 seconds to 8 seconds, but the noise will carry on for as long as the hot tap is open.

Is it the gas valve like the video says?
Is it causing damage to anything?
What causes it?
Why is it related to the boiler being hot or not? I initially thought it was kettling but having listened to lots of kettling on youtube I don't think it is. It's exactly like in that video.
Any idea of cost to fix? Unica 32HE.

Thank you.

This video should not be on this part of the site , do not attempt anything on that video, your Unica needs a proper strip down service by an experienced Vokera friendly engineer , not a flue gas check as most do these days.

I just told you what it is, the Unica has never been properly stripped serviced, too many so called engineers just use a Flue gas analyser and walk away, this boiler needs proper servicing by someone who knows the boiler

What component is causing the noise?

When it was last serviced it was by a Vokera specialist in this area, recommended by someone on here.

Call him.

Andy

I plan to. I also like to try to understand things myself first as I enjoy learning new things. I'm not planning on stripping the boiler down myself so don't worry about that.

It seems like you both know what is causing this noise but don't want to tell me for some reason. Is that correct?
