I have a Baxi Solo heat only boiler sited in the loft. Been working fine for about a year but has just started having difficulty starting first thing in the morning. I can hear that it takes 3-4 attempts to ignite when starting for the first time in the morning but does normally get going. After that and throughout the day it starts up first time with no problems. On a couple of occasions it has not started and locked out. Pressed reset button and starts first or second time and again fine for rest of day. Had a similar problem and had new igniter unit fitted just over a year ago so would have thought this should still be okay. Anyone got any ideas what else could be worth checking ( gas pressure ?//) or is this fairly normal ?

Could be a sticking gas meter governor. This is a job for National Grid but I'm not sure if they'd come out for this fault before you have a qualified RGI inspect the boiler.

There can be many causes and it will need a little detective work to come up with the solution.

In industrial situations sensors and data loggers are used to check the operating conditions.

Not very normal for a domestic boiler though!

How often has the boiler been serviced and was the last a proper service when the boiler was opened up ???

Why fitted the "ignitor unit" and why? What effect did it have on the problem? Do you know exactly what it was?

The boiler was serviced about a year ago and it was opened up. The ignitor unit was fitted by Baxi Heat team as I was on a repair plan at the time. The symptoms were the same as now but needed to be reset every morning . They fitted a new PCB first and the problem persisted so then they replaced ignitor unit by which I mean the electrode gizmo that actually generates the spark. After fitted, boiler always started but again not always first time in morning, so I'm not sure it truly solved the problem. I'm not sure if a boiler is like a car and struggles abit first thing as there is no problems at all after the first start up?

PITA when the boiler is in the loft eh.;)

Sprinkle some talcum powder over it. ;)

Thanks Gaswizard

Sorry ,have to confess don't know what PITA stands for or the relevance of the talcum powder ?
