Bills are often based on estimated consumption. If your meter has been read recently, your consumption to date may have been higher than previous estimates, leaving some catching up to be done.
If your bill is based on an estimate, that estimate may be higher than your actual consumption.
How do your meter readings compare with the figures on your gas bill?
Fluctuating (increasing
) fuel prices and exceptionally cold weather could account for a good part of the discrepancy. Keeping a record of your own meter readings will show if your true gas consumption in cubic metres, or cubic feet, whichever units your meter measures in, is anywhere near what your supplier is billing you for, and prepare you for the shock in advance of the bills arriving.
