boiler problem

boiler fires up ok but main burner goes out after 2-4 mins pilot remains lit
fan runs, a.p.s proved, even turned off + on but no further than pilot light
but if left a while it fires back up but only for a few mins .

If burner is going out after a moment or two, and comes on when boiler has cooled down, why should thermistor be defective?

I think Kevplumb has the answer. In rather more words, water isn't moving fast enough through your boiler. It overheats and switches itself off but will restart later after it's cooled down. Does it make a 'kettling' noise just before it goes off? This is typical of an overheating problem.

Is your pump worlking? Do radiators get hot - or even warm? In other words, is hot water going anywhere at all?
