Have seen some of the gov. grant work boilers installed in the old hw cyl. cupboard with the prv run upwards and through the loft to an outside termination point as the cyl. cupboard was in the middle of the property surrounded by rooms with laminate flooring   How thier inspectors passed the installation i don, t know. Perhaps the white stick and accompanying labourador gives a clue :D

there are no rules that stop a prv from a boiler from going upwards first and then out. The rules only apply to unvented when the volume is above 15lt.

It is not best practise to do this and i wouldn't recommend it but it is allowed.

So what about Legionairs disease, your suppose to prevent not help it. running pipes in such a way that traps the hot water in helps legionairs disease.

Atmos has a boiler with the pressure discharge into a HepVo trap.

Clearly shown here:

Combined Safety Discharge and Condensate Drain
This is a unique option which means that there is no need for an external copper discharge pipe, as is normally required for unvented hot water systems. The 32mm waste pipe is taken to the nearest soil pipe or internal drain connection.

the prv is connected to the heating circuit. legionairs has nothing to do with this or all f&e tanks would not be allowed

I was told it has to run down hill to get rid of the water ,stops bacteria forming. Same as a hot water cylinder cant go below 50 because of legionelers

It runs downhill so it is normally empty.

Empty pipes can't freeze.

If it runs upwards then it is highly likely the upward elements will be holding trapped water almost indefinately after any use of the PRV eg: test at annual service.

The blow off is most likely to occur when the circulation temperature is at its highest eg; winter. If the expansion relief is frozen you are looking at a dangerous situation and some new rads at least.

Thanks guys, seen these Hepvo valves installed before on cyls but wasn't sure whether it could be used on the boiler sdp
