hello, i have a open vented c/heat system its approx 18 years old but worked ok for this time. recently i bought a new controller (potterton e 2001 whatever) this as worked fine but just recently the boiler will work and heat both the hot water and cent heating without the controller asking for heat. the only way i can use the boiler is to use the isolator on the wall to turn it on and off. the thermostat inside the boiler (dial)does seam to work but will not turn the main burner off till it goes to zero on the dial.any ideas help

Check any 3 port or 2 port valve that you may have fitted to your ssystem.

It is these that tell the boiler to come on and it could be a microswitch broken/stuck on in it.

is this the 3 way motorized valve this is the part what sends the hot water to the water heater tank or to the radiators it has 4 wires from it

Yes thats it. More than likely the head needs replacing, as long as it is one that can have the head replaced on its own.

yes just had a look at it. its a danfoss type hsa 3 it does click and makes a slight buzzing noise when i turn on the system. there is a metal lever type arm on the side this moves the plastic valve a quarter of a turn and then half a turn. it always returns to the original position . hope this makes sense. can i disconnect the wires to see if it is faulty and which ones do i do ?

For how cheap a new head is I would just replace it. Otherwise you could mess about for a while only to find it is the head after all
