Dear All,
We are refurbishing our house and would appreciate any advice in respect of a doubt we have (noting that we have no knowledge of plumbing/heating systems etc).
Our house currently has a very old boiler (Potterton Metaheat) and we have been informed by our refurbishers that the house has 10mm pipes.
We have three bathrooms in the house and propose to install electric (instant heat) showers in 2 of the 3 bathrooms (with a regular shower in the third bathroom). We would also use the boiler for (i) room heating, (ii) running hot water in various taps throughout the house that do not rely on the electric showers (such as wash-basin taps/kitchen sink taps etc.) and (iii) dishwasher/washing machine.
Our refurbishers have told us that we should:
(i) change our existing 10mm pipes to 15mm pipes;
(ii) replace our boiler (as they do not think it can cope with the needs of the house);
(iii) and install a megaflow system. They have quoted about £4.5k for all this (supply and install - London area) exclusive of VAT and CORGI and NICEIC test for which they are charging separately.
As we have recently bought the house and have not moved in yet, we don't know whether the boiler is capable of servicing the needs of the house (with the existing pipes and without megaflow).
We would be grateful for your views on the following:
(a) given that two of our bathrooms will have electric (instant heat) showers and we are a two-person household with occasional guests, would you think it is advisable to make these changes?
(b) if so, is there any particular type of boiler that we should ask for to replace our existing on (e.g. we understand from other threads that combi boilers may not be very good) in conjunction with the megaflow system?
(c) is the 15mm pipe width adequate or, if we are replacing the pipework anyway, should we go for a higher pipe-width?
(d) Our boiler (located in one storage cupboard on the ground floor) is presently connected to some massive water tanks in another cupboard (on the second floor). Our refurbishers tell us that one of the ancillary benefits of replacing the boiler is that space will be freed up as the tanks can be removed (from the cupboard on the second floor) and need not be replaced - they say that with installing a megaflow unit and a new boiler we will have running hot water, but we are not sure how this can be achieved without tanks storing hot water being located somewhere?
They need to order stuff next Monday (if we are going ahead with this bit) and so would like to hear back from us by Saturday whether we want to replace boiler/install new pipes/install megaflow etc. Therefore, speedy responses would be much appreciated.
Many thanks for your help.
