something that covers fault finding would be even better?

Plumbing mechanical service by G J Blower.

This one....

I have the second edition....
:p

Understanding the basics is what facilitates proper fault finding. Flow charts are not a good place to start.

However,

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Central-Heating-Fault-Finding-Repair/dp/0954601300/ref=pd_sim_b_15

This publication is good fun for pointing out the bits that are in serious need of updating, and there are several others on Amazon that are much of a muchness.

The Trelor and blower books are the best IMHO.

Ironically I suppose, as Gravity circulation is no longer installed in the domestic field (outside of solid fuel before the pedants chirp up); by definition gravity systems are pretty easy to faulty find.

Hot water = less dense than cold water.

Pipes not blocked?
Valves turned open?
Water in system?
Heat source working?

System working.

Heat transfer poor? Descale.

Open vented on the other hand.... well - see publications above.
