I might ask you to consider what would happen to the equation if there wasn't 2x O2 but only 1x O2.

So go get your chemistry book out...

No you're not, you've already used the carbon to make the carbon monoxide. The carbon that does the blackening comes from the combustion process which does not perform like a chemical equation. We can't get stochiometric conditions to work, so we work with a 5% to 6% excess oxygen supply. Even then there is CO and C2 given off.

What is the question? as oilman has said this is the equation for perfect combustion. If you half the oxygen supply you will turn your co2 emissions to co (carbon monoxide).
The original point was just to back up the post that a hole in the flue pipe leaking into the air pipe would reduce the oxygen available the the combustion chamber causing incomplete combustion and a nice yellow flame.
Obviously you would still need a leaking case seal aswell to encounter that peaceful death! :)
