Borrowed Earth

Some years ago I was asked to replace 5 or 6 wall lights, at the final one I found 70VAC between N & E, which suggested a lifted earth at that paticular fitting. As the wiring was fully chased, I drilled through the wall & picked up a known good earth from a neighbouring rooms light fitting.

Did I do bad?

Although you have made the circuit safer than it was before I would still want to investigate why the cpc was not connected further back along the circuit, just in case the L+N are poorly terminated as well !
