Dishwasher not cleaning properly - debris left on dishes. Have tried the usual stuff - filters, cleaned rotary arms etc. Puddle of dirty water left in the bottom of the filter - should that be there?

Your machine is probably suffering from underfilling and/or poor circulation.
You havent given the model number or age but you need to disconnect and pull the machine out.
Remove lid,remove left side panel,remove lower kick panel and front cover
plate.
This will give you access to the matrix and circulation pipes.
The pipe that runs from the outlet of the matrix to the sump is prone to clog up(ie left to right below the door)
Yo may need to clean the matrix itself and the waste outlet from the sump to
the matrix on the lhs of the machine.
