I need to box in some central heating pipes in my living room whilst I'm redecorating. The thing is, I want it done quickly and cheaply. If i use plasterboard do I need to plaster over it before painting or can I paint straight on to the plasterboard. If so, how do I conceal the joins?

i would'nt use mdf. it has been banned in the USA as the dust given off when you cut it causes cancer.

Perhaps if you are working with it day in day out. If its only occasionally you should be ok as long as you wear a dust mask.

Most dust particles you inhale will probably cause cancer, shall we all stop breathing. We don't know what were breathing in when we walk about so lets put things into perspective instead of being alarmist.

Just for the Americans, too much fat can kill you, but you haven't banned fast food and take outs yet have you

Why not use ply?.....just as easy.

If water gets into MDF it will swell.

Then primer undercoat and topcoat it as normal.

yup, I used 6mm finnishing ply from wickes to box in my piping. Left it sligtly long over the edge and then planed it and belt sanded to get the ultimate fit!

Nice and smooth easy to finnish. Bitta filla and jobs a gudun

Well done....but prime it before you fill it.

Really? How comes? I was gonna fill the holes first then primer it?

Filler sticks better to primer than bare metal or wood...also, by filling first you may start the rusting process off between the head of the nail/screw and the filler.
