Hi All

I'm in the process if laying new floorboards in my master bedroom as the old ones creaked something rotten.

After pulling up the boards yesterday, I've found a row of breeze blocks running across the middle of the room which I believe are sitting above, what was, a wall below but now some sort of RSJ. I also assume their this may have been a wall in the bedroom at some point but no way of telling.

These blocks are slightly higher than the joists so the boards sitting on top of then are bowed and really don't help with the creaking.

Any idea if these blocks are needed for anything or just a lazy builder left the bottom row of blocks after a conversion?

I'll try and get pics later if that'll help?

Cheers. Karl.

If there used to be a wall upstairs, or a fitted carpet, perhaps that is why they were not removed. You can take them out now. Fit some noggins or struts between the joists first to prevent them moving now the wall has gone. A older carpenter might put herringbone struts in, but I can't do that neatly, and probably you can't either.
