Brick Slips straight onto existing brick work

Hi all,

Just wondered if anyone had ever put brick slips straight onto existing brickwork. Planning to do this to internal chimney breast (going for the exposed brick look) because original brickwork looks tatty. Would I need to render first then use adhesive or would they go straight onto the bricks? then just point them?

I though they came with a backing board that you fixed to the wall?

Good idea about the backing board - maybe cement board like used under tiling in bathrooms that would give a true flat finish - and grey so you might not need to point up the slips
