I have an old Clarke generator that uses this engine. I actually stripped it a few years ago to investigate it not starting but then other priorities prevented me from putting it back together. I had hoped there would be workshop manuals available online but suppose, being an American product, people are worried about copyright infringements. Am I right in thinking that I need to remove the main bearing to see the valve timing mark on the crankshaft gear? there is a corresponding dot on the end of the camshaft gear. None of the my pullers are long enough and the bearing is a very tight fit.

Yes that is correct - with the bearing removed (which usually stays captive in the crankcase housing) you'll see a centre punch timing mark.
John :)

I might have to make something like that, perhaps using a length of iron water pipe, if I can find any big enough. I miss Screwfix, I used to be able to order stuff from them before Brexit.

Just a thought......is there a centre punch mark on the crankshaft counterweight itself?
The very early engines did have marks there.
