I'm not keen on embedding a small, cheaply made, permanently powered SMPSU (or dozens of them!) inside the walls of my house.

Plug in chargers for me...

.... USB Charging has a lot more detailed requirements than that. For example the voltage which appears, its tolerance, the current available to be drawn, the signaling to determine the level of current and the connector details. I have seen a review of tens of USB supplies and I can say that I would be unwilling to plug anything expensive of mine into a random adapter without first putting it on an oscilloscope.

Thanks .... so what (if any) Standard exists, compliance with which would make you feel willing to plug something expensive into the product concerned?

As I implied, that, per se, is not really my concern.

I'm more concerned about the modern tendency for hybrid/composite/'integrated' products which consist of two or more functional components, none of which can (easily, or at all) be replaced individually - so that when one dies, one has to replace 'the lot'.

I guess (genuine) USB-IF logo marked, or trusted manufacturer (or as said personally tested).
The cheap Chinese copies have been using their own USB logo which is subtly different from the real one. Logos are not usually meaningful, except that USB-IF engages lawyers to pursue misuse.
