I'm wanting to build a loft in my sons room. The ceilings are about 12' and it will be nice to really open up the room. I have drawn up some plans in google shetchup. The loft will be 6' x 10' x 7' to sit above the doors and windows.

My main question is how big of posts should I use? My plans have 4x4 but I've started to wonder if I need 6x6 posts. The loft will be free standing and not permanently attached to the walls. For the joists I'm planning on using 2x6's spaced 12" apart. From online calculators this should be adequate.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. This will be primarily used for sleeping but I'm sure some play will go on up there.
