Hi,

In order to create a bit more hall space I want to get rid of this corner cupboard and replace with panelling of some sort, floor to ceiling to hide the meters, stop tap etc ( I don’t need the hooks/coat storage). The plan is then to put coir style matting across the front and carpet the rest of the hall.
I plan to:
Remove existing cupboard - potentially leave the studs attached directly to the wall to build off.
Repair or replace floorboards (there’s lots of gaps and cut boards)
Insulate to reduce drafts under the floor(currently v drafty in the cupboard)
box out with stud work (use existing studs if suitable) - this will need to be fairly deep to accommodate the meters , fuse boxes etc.
Clad with … maybe tongue and groove for a traditional look? skirting, coving at the top , then paint.
Include (somehow) access panels for the meters above and the fuse boxes, gas and water stops.

Any thoughts appreciated:

Is it a sound idea to box in pipes, cables etc?
Any ideas or tips on how to achieve a decent finish with t&g? Or suggest an alternative? I Imagine the corners and the access panels have the potential for ending up looking like a dogs dinner.

It’s possible, finish depends on care taken.
I used T&G in a small box room/cupboard that leads off a bedroom and was bare brick.

loads of stud work to ensure fixings.
fit T&G being sensitive to sight lines so edges are not seen.
i would sacrifice a tiny bit of space and build out to cover big bumps, a smooth line is better

edge wise, I used L shape profile to fit around a cable route so the “lid” of a box comes off but looks fixed.
some mains cables come up from the floor to the attic

I ran my T&G horizontal in the box room.
A whole hall in T&G might give a youth hostel feel if not done right?
My panelling was painted flat white

Getting a smart meter might minimise the clutter?
The breaker box could have a T&G flush door or buy a panel to suit, bearing in mind the need for possible access in the dark
magnets could hold a panel on

You could make it in sheet material like 18mm MDF and just use a few bits of batten where needed to screw together…easier than forming it out of studwork

If you can get hold of the dado rail and wallpaper you could continue the lower section around.

Above you could make up dummy panels with small panel bead - ie 4 pieces with mitres at the corners forming a rectangle.
