Whilst on the subject of screws either timber to timber or timber to concrete, what is the recommended depth that a screw should go into the receiving object? Is there a guide based on width / application?
Where two frames meet the timbers to be joined will be 50mm into 75mm for this I was planning on 6 x 100mm and for fixing common studs into top and bottom plates 6 x 75mm, thee would give around 50mm and 25mm penetration respectively - is this sufficient?

I have just found this document which relates to timber - timber fixings and after some research I think means that if using size 6 screws the minimum headside penetration should be 21mm and pointside should be 42mm. So I need to ensure that the timber being screwed into is penetrated by at least 42mm.
So for a 75mm - 50mm joint the screw needs to go through from the 50mm side ino the 75mm timber and penetrate to a depth of 42mm (over half way). Or should I be using smaller diameter screws and penetrate less? (all very complicated).
If using 5mm diameter screws the min penetration depth is 35mm so a 5 x 90 would suffice as it gives 40mm penetration if screwed in from the 50mm timber side.
