At any rate it seems very likely he will be elected unopposed His first major policy speech about devolving power and redistributingmoney to the North is interesting. Although he is mocked on social media for thinking he can run the country like he runs Manchester trams, he clearly understands the importance of winning the Manchester mayoral election. Strategically he’s caught Re form between a rock and a hard place: if they attack the proposal to transfer tax revenue to the North, they will be unpopular in the North; if they support it they are shafting the South. So winning the Manchester mayoral election is very important, it will greatly strengthen his hold on power, and further weaken Re form. He’s a smart cookie.

We already had a devolving of power when the BBC moved from London to Manchester a few years ago. I can't say it did much good. It put up house prices beyond the reach of locals and brought a glut of poncey shops, cafes and wine bars, all out of the reach of ordinary folk. There are very few Mancunians in Manchester now.

How would they reverse the changes which you view negatively? Create a micro-recession to collapse house prices? Forcibly close shops, cafes, and wine bars which "ordinary folk" can't afford?

Andy Burnham is not going to be an elected PM. Labour would not dare put this out to a GE as it should have been. Says a lot about the hype going on around labour and Burnham. Starmer would have been better left in No10.
