I'm in the process of installing a complete new radiator circuit and I've got to the point where I need to rip out the old pipwork under the floorboards to allow me to run the new in. However as I'm not able to take time off work and doing this at weekends and evenings we still need hot water, so I was thinking of cutting the feed / return pipes that run off to the rads just past the three way valve and connecting them together so that they simply form a loop. I would then turn off the CH at the programmer and just leave the HW programmed in.

I could then remove all the old pipework, rads etc and run in the new into the existing slots in the joists etc

We have an electric fire in the lounge so we wouldn't go without heat altogether, it would just be a tad nippy in the bedrooms in the morning ;)

This would work as long as the 3-port MZV wasn't close to the boiler, but since you won't be operating the heating it ought to be safe anyway (as long the MZV closes the heating port correctly).

Is this a bungalow? If not then perhaps you could leave one floor of the house with heat while you work on the other.

Thanks for the reply. No its not a bungalow, and the way it was installed means I can't force heat to the downstairs. I could probably have the bathroom rad as the only rad on the cct as this is the first one fed from the pump if I need to have some means of a safety belt incase the 3 way failed or screwed up !
