Good Morning All

I am planning to pull a cable for my electrician so it can be terminated onto our consumer unit and the circuit is for a double electric oven. At this time I dont have the exact length of the cable run but would suspect it will be close to 20m.

The oven has a rating of over 5kW so would a 6mm 32A MCB be okay or should I be using 10mm and going for a 40A?

I dont plan on running any sockets off this circuit, its purely for the oven.

regards and best wishes

Ian

This should be agreed with electrician when you get your new consumer unit installed.

Speak to your electrician about these details because it will depend on several factors. If you don't then it is unlikely he will sign the work off.

Which new consumer unit? However, I agree that it's something for the designer/installer to decide.

Kind Regards, John.

Thanks holmslaw,

I have checked the path the cable will take and there is no lagging or insulation along the route.

I will leave the decision about the MCB to the electrician

10mm it is then!

The CU has been in-situ for a number of months now and is not being installed as part of this new circuit for the oven

Yes, but that was back in May - and since the OP is now talking about MCBs, I would have suspected (maybe incorrectly!) that the new CU has been installed by now.

Kind Regards, John.

JohnW2 is correct. The CU has been installed (as a different project) and my enquiry regarding the circuit for the oven is to provision a new circuit and not to replace an existing one.

Sorry for the confusion - just couldn't understand why you went to the expense of getting a new consumer unit fitted without asking the spark to fit the cooker unit circuit.

Either 6mm (32Amp) or 10mm (40Amp) cable/MCB will do.
I personally would go for 6mm. Thats more than adequate for most ovens and trying to work with 10mm over 20m is not for the faint hearted.
It will bend when and where it wants to bend and go

I repeat my earlier statement that if you want this circuit connected to the new RCD protected CU then you must speak to the electrician before you start the work - if he is legit - he cannot sign off the work otherwise.

Thanks riveralt,

Yep, I have text my sparky to tell him what I am doing but he is yet to reply.

I have not started any work on pulling this cable and will not until he gets back to me. I just appreciate the extra bit of knowledge to ensure I am aware of what is needed

The CU was put in out of necessity - see photo but we then found that the oven is on the same circuit as the plug sockets in the kitchen hence this little job has arisen.

I tend to pull all the cables as reduces the time the electrician needs to be onsite and I can do it in time available to me (I am used to pulling cables as I am a network engineer, just not electrical ones! - CAT5/6, fibre etc). I pulled both earth bonding runs for the new CU but under the advice of my electrician. I know my limitations and purely only embark on things that I know are within my capabilities.

Thanks for your comments.
