which of course then raises the question of whether it's for mechanical maintainance..

It is good practice for everything to have an isolator provided close to the device. But I have yet to find a specific regulation (or guide) that says that one MUST be provided for an electric shower.

I haven't found one either, but it will be in the manufacturers fitting instructions and they have (Triton) recently changed them from Should!! to Must!! for both RCD and DP isolators.
 
Aah yes, the 14th. Came out just before the relief of Mafeking so not relavent.

In effect from 1966 through to 1981, so not exactly ancient history. The switch requirement may have be carried through to the 15th edition, but I no longer have a copy of the latter to check.
