I used to do my own wiring on my own house, but now I’ve been P’d off, so to speak. I’d like to do some still (and will have it officially inspected – I want it to be safe!) – can anyone advise me on cabling guidelines? This is what I usually do, but is it up to the current regs/good practice?
Cabling in ceiling & floor voids
– clipped on to a joist
– clear of any insulation
– cut through joists near an end, rather than in the middle
– 50mm out of reach of future stray screws/nails – is 50mm ok?
– anything else ??
Cabling inside 100mm stud walls (which is completely filled up with Celotex foam insulation), with a 12.5mm plasterboard skin
- lighting – I’m using 1.5mm T&E
- do I run just behind the plasterboard surface, or dig out a channel in the foam & bury the cable deeper (out of reach of screws, etc)
- power – 2.5mm T&E
- same query as for lighting, but if I have to go a distance along inside the insulated stud wall, do I upgrade that section of the ring to allow for the fact that it’s surrounded by insulation? What size cable – 6mm?
Thanks in advance
