hi helpers, I am tiling my en suite/ new shower tray etc
ive just hacked off all the tiles in shower cubicle and in alot of places its taken off the plaster down to the breeze blocks I have never attempted to plaster before it looks so easy watching someone doing it ! anyway shall i attempt it
is there any ready mix i can buy to make it easier oh and a cheapy trowel
it doesnt need to be perfect just pretty flat as i am going to tile over it

You wanna render it if you are tiling it, or batten and board with a suitable covering, moisture resistant board or aquapanel in wet areas.

Don’t use plaster but if you do use conventional san/cement render then you will have to wait for it to dry out thoroughly before you cam tile; this can take up the 4 weeks depending on thickness & area. Trade trick is to use a cement based tile adhesive, which you should be using anyway if your tiles are larger than 300 x 200mm; you can tile over this the next day. Or you can use a quick set render if you’ve larger areas, cheaper than cement tile adhesive but can work out expensive if you’ve a lot to do. If time is an issue you can board it out & tile directly onto that but use the rights boards for the job, not ordinary plasterboard.

Take some time out to read the Tiling forum sticky & the forum archive posts as there are many threads covering this topic, it may just prevent you from making potentially expensive mistakes with your tiling project

if i cement board will i need to tank ?
i bought the house from new 14 years ago, how would i know if the pro tiler did tank it ? if he didnt, then it hasnt done any harm !

I'm sure you'd be ok in two weeks - if you went for the non-render solution (as per Richard C's post). MR p/board for non-wet areas and cement board for wet areas would be quicker to sort, tho less elegant than a render solution.

I had a new build house from 2000. The builder used standard wallboard even behind the tiles in the combined bath/shower. We had some leaking round the shower screen, which had to be patched up.

14 years ago - I guess depends on the builder....

No need to tank cement boards unless forming a wet room.

Unlikely; unless the house is high end, most tight asred developers would do it as cheaply as possible. If it’s standard wallboard (most likely), it’s done well to last 14 years.

oh dear I am in a state, ive been hours trying to hack of old adhesive, so can i just tile straight onto the rendering its pretty sound apart from a few divots if i can will i need to put on some kind of bonding agent beore tiling
boarding aint really practical cheers P M

Remove all the adhesive so you don’t have high spots & then fill any holes/hollows in the render with cement tile adhesive as I said before, you can then tile over it next day.

Most adhesives manufacturers don’t recommend a primer but always follow their instructions. Sometimes an acrylic primer can be used if it’s very dusty or a gypsum base but be very careful what you put on there; never use standard PVA. What size/type are your tiles?

Cant thank you enough Richard ive waisted today but at least i know where im going now ! tiles are 32cm x 25cm last question ( today ) lol
