Can I get away with not sanding these floorboards?

Hi guys, I'm hoping to avoid sanding these floorboards before I stain dark and varnish. It's only a rented house so there's a limit to how much I care about doing a perfect job - the question is would it work and would it look awful?

Hahah. I'm on pretty good terms with the landlord, and I've been here for three years. The existing carpet is totally disgusting, with fag burns and stains aplenty. Nobody could possibly prefer it as it is...

So, any constructive advice?
